Talk to Your Physician
Discuss molecular profiling with your doctor
Unlike consumer DNA testing kits that determine ancestry, patients cannot order molecular profiling tests, but you can proactively discuss this topic with your doctor who can order the test. If you want to learn whether molecular profiling may be appropriate in determining your therapy options, talk with your oncologist. As with any treatment plan, you and your doctor decide which options are best.
Questions to consider asking your treating oncologist
Am I a good candidate for molecular profiling?
What type of molecular profiling are you thinking about ordering? Is it comprehensive to include all DNA and RNA genes and proteins?
If not, why wouldn’t we do a more comprehensive molecular profile if one is available?
Will molecular profiling help identify different treatment options (i.e., chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy) and/or clinical trials? And how will you use this information?
Can we use existing biopsy samples for molecular profiling, or will I need a new biopsy?
Make the most of your time with your physician by planning ahead.
